Description
A Louis XVI-period portico clock in white and black marble, gilded bronze and a blue and white biscuit porcelain medallion. It rests on a stepped rectangular plinth embellished with chiselled bronze panels, supported by ‘toupie’ feet. Above, two pilasters rise, flanked by corbels and topped by lyres framing a white enamelled dial with Arabic numerals and baton hour-markers. It is richly decorated with lyres, vine tendrils, quivers, garlands and crowned with an antique-style vase. Dial signed “TAVERNIER à PARIS”. Wire-driven movement with a balance wheel decorated with a “solar” mascaron (a twisted foot, small chips of enamel on the dial and minute cracks on a medallion). H: 55cm W: 38cm D: 10cm NB: Jean-Pierre TAVERNIER (1714–1795) came from a distinguished dynasty of clockmakers in Paris and was based on Rue de Buci, near Saint-Sulpice
