This plaster is a reduced version of the marble executed in 1782 by Claude Michel dit Clodion (now lost) for the bathroom of the Hôtel de Besenval, home of Pierre-Victor de Besenval de Brünstatt, originally from Switzerland. This model of a reclining bacchante was a great success and reproductions were circulating in France from 1788.
