Philibert-Louis DEBUCOURT (1755–1832), after Republican Calendar, Year II – 1793 An allegory of Philosophy, wearing a Phrygian cap, seated in profile facing left amidst various attributes (a globe, a sundial) and reading a book resting on her lap. Behind her, a winged cupid leaning on a sphere writes on a sheet of paper: ‘The French Era / counting from the foundation / of the Republic, 22 September / 1792 of the common era / the day on which the sun / entered the sign / of Libra. / The year is divided into / 12 months of 30 days. / Each month into 3 parts / of 10 days called / Decades. / There are 5 days [...]”. Below, the new Republican calendar, titled and captioned: “On a lofty summit, Philosophy sits upon a marble throne adorned with images of Fertile Nature, her diadem being the cap of / Liberty, tramples underfoot the Gothic monuments of error and superstition upon which the ignorant and ridiculous division of time was founded, and draws from the great book / of Nature the principles and names of the new Calendar, which a genius standing beside her, attentive to her voice, records as she dictates.
