Seditious Legitimist box.
‘The Best of the Republics’, c. 1848, large bronze medallion-box bearing a bust of the Republic facing left, wearing a Phrygian cap, inscribed ‘VOILA LA MEILLEURE DES REPUBLIQUES’, on the reverse, centred within an oak wreath: ‘JUS DIVINUM SALUS POPULI’.
Inside are nine small medals set within a white metal frame.
In the centre, ‘HENRI DE FRANCE’, head facing right; on the reverse, three lilies and the inscription ‘AVENIR PROSPERITE’, 18 mm. Surrounding these are eight small medallions: Henry IV on the right, on the reverse ‘BONTÉ VALEUR’; Louis XVIII on the left, ‘GENIE SCIENCE’; Charles X on the left, ‘PIÉTÉ POPULARITÉ’; the Duke of Angoulême on the left, ‘RIGHTEOUSNESS, GENEROSITY’; the Duchess of Angoulême on the right, ‘MISFORTUNE, RESOLVE’; the Duke of Berry on the left, ‘MISFORTUNE, FATALITY’; Duchess of Berry on the right, with ‘GENTLENESS HUMANITY’ on the reverse; Madame de Chambord on the left, ‘WIT ERUDITION’, 10 mm.
