Johann-Baptiste Stahl (1869–1932), model by, attributed to A phanolite plaque decorated with a classical scene depicting Aphrodite comforting Cupid in a wooded landscape, framed by Greek-style mouldings. Monogrammed in the bottom right-hand corner. Visible dimensions: 19.5 x 19.5 cm. A gold medallist at the 1900 World’s Fair for the invention of Phanolith, Stahl revitalised the classical style in the tradition of Wedgwood for the Villeroy & Boch factory in Mettlach, in the Saarland, where he headed the design school. The Pottery Museum in Betschdorf regularly exhibits his works, which utilise a revolutionary technique that gives the decoration a three-dimensional effect with shadow effects. Frame: 41.5 x 40 cm.
