Voluntary lot
Description
A large Persian rug (Isfahan or Kashan) in wool, hand-woven, featuring a rich field with a blue and red background, centred on a large, multi-lobed star-shaped medallion with a double heart from which broad, floral scrolls radiate, ‘Shah Abbas’ palmette motifs and stylised ‘boteh’ motifs.
The spandrels echo the virtuosity and sinuousness of the central medallion.
A wide main border with triple braid, adorned with a succession of floral cartouches, interlaced foliage and crenellated lotus flowers, framed by narrower counter-borders featuring finer geometric and floral motifs on a cream and sky-blue ground.
Entirely hand-knotted carpet. Wool pile (with silk overlay?), cotton warp and weft, fine fringes at the ends. The reverse reveals a very dense and beautifully even weave.
20th century, 420.5 x 297.5 cm, minor marks and localised areas of wear.
