Description
Romain ROLLAND (1866–1944)
A charming autograph letter, signed, to Jeanne BERTH.
7 February 1902. 4 pages, in-12 format. With its envelope.
“Good heavens! Good grief! Goodness me! Madam! Won’t
you stop calling me ‘Professor’ all the time! I
’m no good. I’m naughty, very naughty… As for the
remarks about women, they’re just a few
little jibes thrown in for good measure… Per bacco! Should we really
hold back with those little creatures? Aren’t they
delighted when we speak ill of them? … As for your husband, let him
not get too cocky, just because he has a beard, the symbol of
omnipotence. Men are even worse than
women; and husbands worse than anything…. Men and women,
they’re all cut from the same cloth! The only good ones are
little children, plain and simple… And don’t
pull a face at what I’ve said, and don’t grumble. But friends
are neither men nor women. They are my friends. Yours
respectfully impertinent.
