17th-century Neapolitan or Sicilian school, Geronimo GERARDI (attributed to): ‘Saint Agatha’. Oil on re-stretched canvas. 122 x 102 cm. Re-stretched CNES expert: Mr Nicolas JOYEUX. Exhibiting superb craftsmanship, this saint holding the palm of martyrdom can be identified as Saint Agatha, recognisable by her severed breast, discreetly concealed beneath a cloth from which a tear of blood trickles from, which she carries on a silver tray. A Sicilian native of Catania, presumably born during the reign of Emperor Decius, Saint Agatha was horribly tortured by the consul Quintianus. She was one of the most revered saints in southern Italy during the 17th century. Born in Antwerp in 1595, Hyeronimus Gerards, known as Geronimo Gerardi, settled in Sicily from 1620. Working in Palermo and Trapani, where he died in 1648, he held the post of Flemish proconsul alongside his work as a painter. These roles enabled him to come into contact with artists as well as wealthy Flemish and Genoese merchants settled in Sicily, which explains the presence of his works in Genoa, where his art was highly regarded. A friend of Antoon van Dyck in Palermo and deeply influenced from his youth by the work of Peter Paul Rubens, Geronimo Gerardi incorporated both Northern and local influences into his palette, beginning with the work of Pietro Novelli. The ‘Study of Saint Agatha’ echoes the ‘Saint Rosalie’ from the Banca Carige collection in Genoa, or the face of the Virgin in the painting from the monastery of San Martino delle Scale in Palermo, published by Santina Grasso in 2018 1 , and finally with the Saint Catherine of Alexandria from the Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo, where we find the same silvery-white drapery, which is not without recalling the Northern influences of Geronimo Gerardi and the dialogue he maintains with Antoon van Dyck
