Description
TWO KNIVES with tortoiseshell handles, blades in gold and steel. PARIS, 1777–1778 (letter-date O) for one blade. The handle is made of tortoiseshell. The ferrules, pommels and side guards, as well as one of the blades, are made of gold in various colours: rose, green (twisted bands on the ferrules and pommels), yellow (585 parts per thousand) (one blade 750 parts per thousand). Hallmarks on one blade: hallmark for small gold articles 1774–1780 (chickweed seed), letter-date O (1777–1778), hallmark for gold and small silver articles 1782–1789 (interlaced LL). Wear to the decoration and small chips to a ferrule and the tortoiseshell, scratches; the steel tip of the blade is broken. Length 18.5 cm; total gross weight 43.5 g. Expert: Sophie Vergne
