Description
SILVER (800) SOUP Tureen and Stand. Foreign work, probably from POLAND, by silversmith MH, late 18th–early 19th century. The body rests on a circular base. Two side handles with contoured edges and beaded decoration, mounted with hinges and a pin. Domed lid surmounted by an artichoke-shaped knob. Decorated with gadroons (on the rim of the stand, the foot, the lid and the base). Coat of arms applied to the lid, the body and the rim of the display stand, within a shield surmounted by a crown of a Prince of the Holy Roman Empire: “Azure, a knight brandishing a sword, upon a galloping horse”; supporters: two knights and their shields, the whole surmounted by a mantling of ermine; motto: Badz co badz [‘Be that as it may’]. CZARTORYSKI coat of arms. Letters marked on the rim of the lid and beneath the base. Hallmarks: 13 / MH / CE (Poland, Kraków office (former Austro-Hungarian hallmarks) / weevil (import hallmark, Paris 1838–1864). Knocks and scratches; slight dent in the lid’s handle; repolished.
