Description
Adriaen de GRYEFF (1657–1722) Pointing dog in front of a wild duck and a hunting trophy Oil on prepared panel (a single board, not parquet-style) On the reverse, stencil mark 731LZ 970DW, old sales label 25 x 42 cm Some wear and restoration Provenance: - Tajan auction, 15 December 1997, lot no. 94, illustrated on p. 47 Born into a family of artists, Adriaen de Gryeff received his early training from his father, the still-life painter Jacobus de Claeuw (1623–1694), whose influence profoundly shaped his early career and guided the choice of his first compositions. After several fruitful trips to the Netherlands, he settled for a time in Ghent, where he was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke, then spent some time in Antwerp before taking up permanent residence in Brussels, the city where he would spend most of his life. Intended for an aristocratic clientele, his works reveal his father’s artistic legacy whilst revitalising the still-life genre through the inclusion of animals and animated scenes. His compositions, combining dogs, game and poultry in carefully constructed landscapes, demonstrate a personal style that brought him widespread renown. Expert: Mégane OLLIVIER
