The young master began his career in Antwerp, where he distinguished himself very early on with portraits commissioned by the city’s wealthy bourgeoisie. His distinctive style, capable of capturing both the inner life of his subjects and the splendour of their rank, soon opened the doors to Europe’s most prestigious courts: first that of Brussels, where he painted Archduke Albert and Infanta Isabella, then that of the Gonzagas in Mantua, before joining the French court, where he worked notably for Marie de’ Medici. In our portrait, the subtlety of his brushwork is evident in the sumptuous rendering of the fabrics, particularly the delicacy of the lace forming the ruff, a veritable halo of light around the face. The delicate rendering of the skin tones, which appear almost lifelike, creates a striking contrast with the background, emphasising the subject’s presence. Expert: Mégane OLLIVIER
