Description
18th-century French school, a follower of Claude GELLEE, known as LE LORRAIN (1600–1682)
Architectural caprice depicting a harbour teeming with figures
Oil on canvas (re-stretched)
69 x 89 cm
Signs of wear and restoration
Richly decorated gilded and carved wooden frame
This charming architectural caprice follows in the tradition of architectural capricci developed in the 17th and 18th centuries in the wake of Claude Gellée, known as Le Lorrain, echoing his taste for idealised harbours bathed in atmospheric and poetic light. In this work, the rendering of the twilight light, diffused in a golden hue, lends the scene a particularly evocative depth.
Through its use of monumental perspectives, backlighting effects and the depiction of an idyllic Mediterranean harbour, this composition also evokes certain decorative painters active in Rome, Venice and France during the 18th century, within the circle of Giovanni Paolo Panini, Alessandro Salucci and the French landscape painters in the Italianate style.
