Somewhere between the ideal and the fantastical, this refined, large-scale composition depicts the biblical episode of the Flight into Egypt, where the majestic natural landscape becomes the silent backdrop to the sacred. Relegated to the background, on the right-hand side of the scene, the Holy Family, accompanied by an angel, makes its way discreetly at the foot of an imposing rocky escarpment, emphasising the Flemish tradition of the ‘landscape with figures’, where the sacred narrative is set against the vastness of the natural world.
Our painting is distinguished by a skilful composition of space: a winding path guides the eye towards a fortress perched on a promontory, whilst successive planes—rocks, valleys and blue-tinged distances—create an atmospheric depth, reinforcing the poetic and meditative dimension of the subject.
Produced in the circle of Tobias Verhaecht, this painting reflects a sensibility still marked by late Mannerism, particularly in the treatment of the rugged terrain and imaginary architecture. The choice of copper as the support—prised in Flemish workshops for its smooth surface and luxurious finish—allows for great finesse of execution here.
