Description
England, second half of the 18th century Silver onion-shaped watch, with a domed plain silver case, a chiselled and enamelled silver dial, the hours marked in Roman numerals, with Arabic numerals marking 5-minute intervals, finely chased and signed SAMSON; the movement held in place by balusters, with a finely chased cock and plate; the plate signed Samson, London, 12112. The outer silver case is embossed with a scene depicting a knight and his horse near a man holding a purse, set against an architectural backdrop. Master watchmaker J. SAMSON, (1760–1796) English hallmark featuring a passant lion on the inside of the case. Weight: 92.77 g Diameter (watch): 40 mm Diameter (including case): 51 mm In fine condition. For comparison: a similar model held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, donated by Joseph W. Drexel in 1889 (89.2.90a, b), dated 1759.
