Description
Johann Rudolf BÜHLMANN (Hemberg, 1812 – Zurich, 1890) "Naples. View of the Gulf of Baia with the Temple of Venus, 1858" Oil on canvas, signed, located and dated “R. Buhlmann. Rom. 1858.” Presented in a bespoke 19th-century gilded wooden frame Stretcher: 79 x 112.5 cm; Including frame: 102 x 134 cm Previously restored, with a patch on the reverse of the canvas in the lower right-hand corner; some craquelure; the canvas is slightly stretched; signs of wear and very slight losses to the paint layer in the sky; a few knocks to the frame and restorations This veduta is a key work from the Roman period of Johann Rudolf Bühlmann’s mature career, a Swiss painter of the late Romantic era. Having arrived in Rome in 1836 thanks to the patronage of Martin Bodmer, he made a name for himself amongst the Swiss artistic colony that gathered at the famous Café Greco. To meet the demand of the international ‘Grand Tour’ clientele, the artist executed his landscapes in the studio, based on sketches made from life. The inscription ‘Rom. 1858.’ illustrates this method, signifying that the canvas was painted in Rome based on sketches accumulated during his summer travels. The genesis of this composition is best understood in conjunction with the artist’s studio collection held in the ETH Zurich’s graphic arts collection. This collection contains an exceptional set of drawings made in Baïa (Baja) in May 1858, depicting in particular the same coastline with the ruins of the Temple of Venus, as well as numerous studies of sailors and boats similar to that in our painting. We would like to thank the archivists at the ETH Zurich Archives Centre for their invaluable assistance in granting us access to their archives.
