Description
Alexandre MAIGRET, who qualified as a master cabinetmaker around 1775. Upright secretary desk in solid mahogany and flamed mahogany veneer, opening via a drawer at the top, a counterweight-operated flap revealing nine drawers in three rows and two secret drawers with a mechanism, two doors in the lower section revealing three drawers in three rows, gilded Empire-style bronze fittings, original green marble top, stamped four times beneath the marble at each corner, Empire period. 136 x 98 x 40 cm Two bronze ornaments are missing where the ball-shaped legs meet the frame, the two lock plates at the base are missing, the rear right leg is weakened, restoration work on the rear legs, a few cracks and small chips in the veneer, the leather writing pad is damaged Alexandre MAIGRET began his career at the end of the Louis XVI period. It was during the Empire period that he truly displayed his talent. In 1813, he was granted the licence of ‘upholsterer and cabinetmaker to His Majesty the Emperor and King’, which he retained until 1817. He handed over his business to his son in 1824 and retired from business in 1826.
