Jacques PREVERT (1900–1977). ‘David at Saint John Lateran’ Surrealist collage bearing the following posthumous handwritten authentication on the reverse: ‘Collage by Jacques Prévert authenticated by his wife Janine Prévert on 28 January 1987’ 43 x 32 cm. Traces of glue at the corners of the reverse Known and recognised for his poetic work, Jacques Prévert also distinguished himself in the field of surrealist-inspired collage. In the preface to the book published by Maeght, which catalogues some of these montages, Philippe Soupault recalls that Jacques Prévert was passionate about this activity and devoted much of his free time to it, regularly visiting second-hand bookshops and print dealers. Discovered posthumously through his wife and daughter, this body of work delights in surprising the viewer with its wit and mischief, with a touch of the fantastical and non-conformism.
