Description
René Georges Hermann Paul, known as Hermann-Paul (1864–1940). “Portrait of a Woman”. Pastel, monogrammed ‘HP’ in the bottom right-hand corner, mounted under glass in an oak frame. Dimensions: 29.5 x 26 cm. Including frame: 41.5 x 37.5 cm. Frame has been re-glued; in good overall condition
Provenance: the collection of Maurice Guyot, Secretary-General of the Victor Hugo Foundation
The presence of a pastel by Hermann-Paul in Maurice Guyot’s collection can be explained by the artist’s links with the Hugo family: by marrying Pauline Ménard-Dorian in 1911, the former wife of Georges Victor-Hugo, Victor Hugo’s grandson, Hermann-Paul became part of the Hugo family circle. For Maurice Guyot, Secretary-General of the Victor Hugo Foundation, this work thus naturally found its place within a collection dedicated to the memory of the writer
