Description
Jacques BIRCKLE (1734–1803), who qualified as a master cabinetmaker in 1764. Curved chest of drawers in curly rosewood veneer set within frames of palisander veneer, fitted with gilded bronze on the corner spurs, lock plates and pull handle, as well as on the apron, Languedoc marble top; stamped on the frame beneath the marble, accompanied by the JME mark; 18th-century. 82 x 94 x 48 cm. A few rare instances of veneer lifting; in good condition
A prolific and meticulous craftsman, Jacques BIRCKLE set up his workshop at 9 Rue Saint-Nicolas-Saint-Antoine upon obtaining his Master’s certificate; he worked on royal furniture from 1785 to 1789 and then continued his work for the National Furniture Repository during the Revolution. On his death in 1803, his son took over the workshop until 1835.
