Description
[MARSEILLE]. *Le Règlement du sort*. Marseille, Claude Garçin, 1652. Small quarto, 60 pp. (A-F4, G2, H4), red morocco, double gilt fillet framing the text, decorated ribbed spine (bound in the late 18th century). Engraving added at the end, St John. Gallery of verses in the inner margin; stains, water stains, tears; minor restoration on p. 54. Ex-libris crossed out on the title page. 18th-century handwritten ex-libris, ‘Thérèse Charmasson’. Binding heavily stained, upper cap torn off, covers slightly warped.
A rare first edition of these famous municipal regulations setting out the procedure for the drawing of lots used for the annual appointment of the consuls and magistrates of Marseille. This text bears witness to the independence of Marseille’s institutions prior to Louis XIV’s takeover of the city in 1660. It contains the list of eligible citizens or families, the method by which names are placed in the ballot box, the protocol for the draw, the conditions of eligibility or exclusion, and the relevant municipal offices. Very few copies of this printed document were produced; they were intended for municipal officials, magistrates and eligible dignitaries. These 1652 regulations are extremely rare; to our knowledge, there is only one copy in public institutions (BnF); the expanded edition of 1654, on the other hand, is more common. Barbier attributes this work to the Marseille magistrate Antoine de Ruffi, one of the first modern historians of Provence and Marseille; whilst Reboul (Anonymes no. 1886) attributes it to Antoine de Félix, Sieur de La Reynarde.
