Hermann van LINT (Utrecht? c. 1614 – 1681). “Battle Scenes”. A pair of oak panels, single-plank, unglazed, in gilded wooden frames in the Louis XV style. One is signed lower left: H. VAN LINT Fi. Panels: 37.5 x 53.5 cm; including frame: 51 x 67 cm. Good condition The works of Herman van Lint (also known as van Lin) are characterised by Italianate landscapes, battle scenes, genre scenes and hunting scenes. He was influenced by Dirk Stoop and, to a lesser extent, by Philips Wouwerman in his battle scenes. Van Lint presumably spent most of his life in Utrecht, where he is recorded as dean of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1668, 1669, 1670 and 1676. Although this position attests to his status as a respected member of his community, little information has survived about him. Furthermore, van Lint is mentioned in several documents in Utrecht under the name ‘Hermano’, an Italianised form of his first name. According to Marijke de Kinkelder (RKD, The Hague), a stay in Italy cannot be ruled out, given the Italianate character of his landscapes and battle scenes.
