Description
Jean SOLTZER, who qualified as a master cabinetmaker in 1778. A right-hand secretary desk with a front designed to resemble a chest of drawers, made of solid mahogany; the flap reveals ten small drawers, six of the nine front drawers are functional, with Louis XVI-style gilded bronze fittings and a white marble top bordered by an openwork brass frieze; each upright is stamped on the reverse, Louis XVI period. 145 x 63 x 35 cm. A few minor chips and knocks from normal use; the bronze ornament at the base of the lower crossbar is missing
A cabinetmaker of German origin, Jean SOLTZER worked in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. On his death in 1783, his widow continued to run the workshop. Owing to his German heritage, his furniture is characterised by clean lines and subtle elegance.
