Fidelis SCHEY (?–1788), who qualified as a master cabinetmaker in 1777. A weekly calendar case in curly rosewood veneer set within rosewood frames, chamfered side panels, seven drawers on the front, gilded bronze fittings at the lock openings, drawer pulls and on the slightly curved front legs, original veined marble top, stamped on the front left side panel, Transition period. 146 x 85 x 37.5 cm; one lock plate probably added during the Louis XVI period; minor losses and lifting of the veneer; slightly sun-faded
Known only by his first name, Fidelij, during his lifetime, this cabinetmaker was originally from across the Rhine and produced furniture in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, which was sold through a major shop run by his wife. His style is characterised by great simplicity.
