Description
Nicolas PETIT (1732–1791), who qualified as a master cabinetmaker in 1761. A slightly projecting chest of drawers in rosewood veneer, decorated with frames of rosewood fillets, five drawers in three rows, gilded bronze fittings at the lock openings and drawer pulls, corner finials and at the apron, tapered legs with fluting simulated by marquetry, top in grey Sainte Anne marble with original recessed edge, stamped on the front left stanchion, Louis XVI period. 82.5 x 128.5 x 56 cm Restored, glued marble with some chips to the edges and a few areas where the veneer has lifted
Nicolas PETIT, a prolific and renowned cabinetmaker and merchant, became a director of his guild and later its trustee. Active during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, he was one of the most talented practitioners of the Greek Revival style from around 1765 onwards.
