Description
Georges Daniel MONFREID (1856–1929)
Roses on a Chair
Oil on cardboard
Monogrammed and dated 1924
Dedicated “To Mademoiselle Gabrielle VIGREUX, With grateful and respectful remembrance. G-Daniel de Monfreid”
60 x 46 cm
Gabrielle Vigreux was a nurse; she cared for the artist in Paris in 1913.
This is a gift from the artist to his nurse.
This painting is documented in Monfreid’s handwritten notebook dated 21 June 1913, which meticulously records the painting’s genesis
“flowers on a chair that I intended for her... letter to Mademoiselle de Vigreux [...] sent to the nurse with the note: 100 francs"
We read that Monfreid, whilst convalescing, thanked his nurse: he wrote to her, took the letter to her home and painted this still life for her, before enclosing a gift of 100 francs as a token of gratitude.
Resting on the golden straw seat of a rustic chair, the freshly cut roses stand out against a colourful plaid. The hard wood of the panel allowed Monfreid to layer thick, almost mosaic-like brushstrokes; the low light of an early summer morning, noted in his sketchbook, makes the pinkish petals and muted greens of the leaves shimmer.
Intimate in nature, the scene reveals Monfreid’s attachment to Post-Impressionist explorations: fragmented brushstrokes, warm-to-cool colour contrasts, but also a Symbolist delicacy inherited from his friend Gauguin. The work marks a domestic and sensitive interlude in the painter’s career, at a time when he was in the midst of his Parisian period following his stays in Catalonia.
