Description
Roland CHANCO (1914-2017) "The Toreador" Oil on canvas signed lower left. 92 x 73.5 cm
Roland Chanconnier, known as Chanco, was born in Reignac, Indre et Loire. He died in Roquefort-les-Pins (Alpes-Maritimes) at the age of 103. His exceptionally long artistic career was rich and atypical. He produced more than 2,000 paintings and over 600 works on paper, all of which are listed in the 3-volume catalogue raisonné of his work. Initially attracted to sculpture, he eventually opted for painting. He moved to Paris in the 1930s, and painted from the ground up in the heart of Montmartre: the rue de Norvins and the Moulin de la Galette were his favourite spots. He frequented the artists of the Butte, where he met Gen-Paul, Utrillo and Heuze, met Picasso for the first time, and discovered sculpture at Marcel Gimond's studio. Roland Chanco was an outstanding colourist whose style ranged from post-cubism to expressionism. In 1947 he left Paris for the South of France.
