Description
France, Royal Aubusson Manufactory. The triumph of Bacchus in India. Wool and silk tapestry from the 18th century Louis XV period. 228 x 164 cm (Slight accidents in places, beautiful freshness of the original colours).
SUBJECT & ICONOGRAPHIC COMPOSITION :
This work illustrates a classical bacchic scene combined with a pronounced taste for the exotic during the reign of
Louis XV. In the foreground, a young ephebe crowned with vine branches represents Bacchus. He leans on his
thyrse and points to a bunch of grapes held by a young satyr.
The background is dominated by the masterly figure of an Asian elephant, richly caparisoned in blue and green drapery, ridden by a satyr.
green drapery, ridden by a satyr armed with a hook (ankhus). This rare iconography is a direct reference to the mythological
mythological accounts of Bacchus' conquests and triumphs in India.
On the left, a musical satyr stands proudly on his caprine lower limbs, playing the whelk. At centre,
a third kneeling faun presents a basket overflowing with flowers and fruit before a circular carved altar
while an anthropomorphic monkey in the lower right handles a cooling bucket. The ensemble is set against a backdrop of dense greenery, with foliage treated in shades of blue, green and yellow.
