Description
A carved shell cameo depicting “The Sistine Madonna after Raphael”, signed “NIC CERBARA” in the lower left-hand corner. In a gilded bronze frame – Italy, Nicolas CERBARA (1797–1858), first half of the 19th century. Total height: 5.5 – Total width: 4.5 cm (small crack in the upper section and damage to the corners). Nicolas CERBARA (1797–1858) was, along with Giuseppe (1770–1840), one of the sons of Giovanni Battista Cerbara (1740–1840), both of whom are recorded as gem engravers. Like his father, he worked as a medallist at the Mint of Rome. Several cameos are signed ‘Cerbara’, which makes it difficult to distinguish between the various members of the family. Nevertheless, the presence here of ‘NIC’ in the cameo’s signature allows it to be attributed to the youngest son of Giovanni Battista Cerbara.
