France, Third Republic (1870–1940).
A work by Captain François-Jean PAOLI (1842–1923), founder of the Gendarmerie Fund in 1888.
A rare and beautiful bound collection of over 220 documents from 1887 and 1888, the year the "Caisse du Gendarme" was founded, concerning distinguished donors, including 164 autograph letters, 31 autographed and handwritten visiting cards, and 25 blank visiting cards annotated for "La Caisse Nationale du Gendarme", including many generals.
The binding is covered in fine red morocco leather, embossed and gilt with the words "AUTOGRAPHES" and "Charles Pélissier", as well as the name of the bookbinder, "GIRARD DEL NYONS", engraved in black.
The spine is embossed with small friezes and inscribed "1887-88".
At the end of the collection is a copy of the "JOURNAL DE LA GENDARMERIE" No. 1519, dated 21–31 Dec. 1887", mentioning the creation of the gendarme's fund.
