Description
France, 20th century.

Commander’s Cross in gilded metal with enamel, complete with its green moiré silk ribbon, as shown.
Fine workmanship, regulation size, double-sided. Date of manufacture unknown (20th century?).
According to legend, this Order was founded in 125 BC, during the construction of the first leper hospital, by the high priest of the Temple of Jerusalem. More certainly, the Order dates back to the Crusades, when the Crusaders established leper colonies at the gates of Jerusalem. Upon the fall of the Crusader holdings in the Middle East, the Order took refuge in France with King Louis VII. To prevent its dissolution, the Order was incorporated on 11 October 1608 by King Henry IV into the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which had been established the previous year by the same sovereign. The single Order thus created became one of the Royal Orders with a special connection to the Bourbons and was therefore awarded sparingly. See “The Great Book of Orders of Knighthood and Decorations” by Mr André Damien.
