Description
France, Reign of Louis XVI (1774–1789). Officer’s sabre of the mounted chasseurs. Brass mountings, flat pommel with fillets and a diamond-shaped rivet button, long tail decorated with line work. The joint arch is very wide near the pommel and forms a right angle with the crossguard, which forms the curvilinear diamond-shaped lugs. Straight crossguard ending in a faceted button. Grip entirely filigree-worked with copper wire and twisted brass wire chains. Buffalo leather strap. Blade with a light grey mottled patina and traces of oxidation in places, slightly curved, with a hollow edge and flat back featuring a small groove near the back. Blackened leather scabbard with a central back seam and two brass fittings; the chape is cut-out with a button and a suspension ring. 83.5 cm (Blade 70 cm). (Signs of wear and minor damage from use; the lower part of the flanges may have been removed; in good condition).
