France, late Reign of Louis XVI (1774–1793) – Revolution (1789–1795).
Officer’s sabre with a swivel hilt.
Cast brass mountings. Flat cap with a long tail and a diamond-shaped rivet button. Spigot and
swivelling tang with guilloché and cut-out decoration. Quadrangular wooden grip entirely inlaid with a double copper filigree. The guard plate has guilloché and cut-out borders, finished with a small palmette.
Brass ferrule. Blade with a light grey, mottled patina and traces of oxidation, slightly curved, with hollow sides and a flat back, and a dorsal fuller, decorated in the middle third with mottos in cartouches featuring geometric motifs painted in gold on a black background, partly faded, including ‘Vengeur’ on one side and ‘Vive …’ on the other. Blackened leather scabbard with a central dorsal seam and three brass fittings cut in a scalloped shape and decorated with line work, and two suspension rings. Pommel with a button; the suspension ring is missing. Traces of the mark "VACHE" stamped into the leather beneath the pommel.

(Wear and damage; two prongs of the guard plate fractured; the painted decoration on the rear third of the blade is later but original; the scabbard’s pommel opening is cut out; in fairly good condition).
