Description
France, late 18th century – Revolution–Directoire period (1789–1799). French Guards-style grenadier sabre, without scabbard. Cast brass mount of the 1767 model Infantry Grenadier type with 18 strands, the guard arm meeting the crossguard at a right angle and featuring two upper half-lobes. Blade, formerly re-fitted, with a light grey patina stained in places, slightly curved with a hollow edge and flat back, and small fuller grooves near the back. The heel is stamped "MR" surrounded by a frieze of dots. 80.5 cm (blade 67.5 cm). (Signs of wear and minor damage from use; a small crack near the rivet button of the hilt; in fairly good condition). Note: The length of the blade corresponds to the blade lengths of the sabres used by the grenadiers of the French Guards.
