Description
France, late 18th century – Revolution–Directoire period (1789–1799). French Guards-style grenadier sabre, without scabbard. Cast brass mount of the 1767 model Infantry Grenadier type with 18 strands, the guard arm meeting the crossguard at a right angle and featuring two upper half-lobes. The guard is stamped with a crowned ‘A’. Grey blade with traces of oxidation, slightly curved with a hollow edge and flat back, and small grooves near the back. 82.5 cm (blade 70.5 cm). (Signs of wear and normal use, slight play between the blade tang and the mount; in its original condition, never previously in a collection). Note: The length of the blade corresponds in part to the lengths of the blades of the sabres used by the grenadiers of the French Guards.
