Description
France, Revolution–Directoire period (1789–1799). Infantry Grenadier sabre, known as the ‘Briquet’, 1767 model, of Revolutionary-era manufacture, without scabbard. Fittings in cast copper-plated brass with twenty flutes and no half-guard, the guard arm forming a right angle with the crossguard, and stamped with the Klingenthal cock and the cutler’s mark “COULAU”. The crossguard is hallmarked "D". Slightly curved blade, with a hollow edge and flat back, featuring a small fuller near the back and a light grey, mottled patina. No hallmarks or markings on the blade. 74 cm (blade 59.5 cm). (Signs of wear and damage. Fairly good condition).
