Description
France, Consulate (1799–1802) – First Empire (1804–1814). Artillery sabre, Model 1771, second type, from the “Manufacture de Klingenthal – Coulaux Frères”. Cast brass hilt with an eagle’s head raised vertically and a feathered neck secured by three brass rivets. Straight crossguard with a sandblasted back and rounded ends. Fine blade with a light grey mottled patina and traces of oxidation, featuring two fuller lines and a hollow back, finely engraved on one side with an artillery gun surmounted by a lictor’s fasces and a trophy of arms with a cuirass, as well asa crowned eagle holding thunderbolts in its talons, and on the other side, a large lictor’s fasces surmounted by a cuirass and a crowned eagle holding thunderbolts in its talons. Manufacturer’s mark on the heel: “Manufacture de Klingenthal” on one side and “Coulaux Frères” on the other, indicating production during the Consulate (1799–1802). Blackened leather scabbard with a dorsal seam offset to one side within one of the rounded sections and featuring two brass fittings; the pommel has a trigger guard. The pommel is stamped with a "B" beneath a star within a shield for François Antoine BISCH, inspector and chief controller at the Manufacture de Châtellerault, and "19" within a rectangle. It comes with a bleached buffalo leather scabbard holder. 63 cm (blade 48.5 cm). (Signs of wear and normal use; a fine late-production sabre, uncommon and of great interest; in fairly good condition). Note: The 1771 model artillery glaive was carried by gunners until 1812.
