Description
France, First Empire (1804–1814). Light Cavalry sabre, Model AN IX, manufactured by the Solingen Armoury, with a hilt made by the Versailles Armoury. ‘Hunter-style’ hilt in cast brass, with an olive-shaped rivet head. Oval pommel with a long tail. Wooden grip bound with cord, covered in sheepskin and reinforced with a half-olive-shaped brass rivet. Hand guards in the form of a rod with rounded ends. The mount is hallmarked on the main tang with ‘VERSAILLES’ and a cursive ‘B’ within an oval for BOUTET, contractor to the Versailles Manufactory from 1800 to 1818. It is numbered "156" on the main guard arm. No tie. Blade with a mottled grey patina, hollow-ground edges and a flat back, marked "Manufacture de Solingen K. S. & C." (for Kirschbaum. Schimmelbusch & Cie). The blade heel is stamped with a partially legible ‘C’. Steel scabbard with a mottled grey patina and traces of rust-coloured oxidation, featuring two suspension rings and an asymmetrical steel pommel. 101 cm (blade 87 cm). (Signs of wear and use, in its original condition, fairly good condition).
