Description
France, Consulate – First Empire (1800–1814). Light Cavalry Officer’s sabre, without scabbard. Gilt cast brass mount known as the ‘Marengo’ style (remnants of gilding). The pommel features melon-shaped ribs with a hemispherical rivet and a short tail. The tang is made of finely chequered ebony. The joint arch is ribbed and curved, connected to the pommel by a small arched branch. The crossguard is decorated at the lower part by a shield-shaped lug, with a ribbed border. Semi-curved blade with a hollow edge and flat back, engraved with war trophies and floral motifs, showing traces of blue and gold in the third section and a mottled grey patina. 86.5 cm (blade 73 cm).
