Description
France, early 19th century. Infantry sabre known as a ‘briquet’, AN XI model for the National Guard. One-piece cast brass hilt with 28 flutes, with no visible hallmark or maker’s mark. Slightly curved blade with a mottled grey patina, hollow-ground edge and flat back, with no visible hallmark or maker’s mark. Leather tie present. Black leather scabbard with two line-decorated brass fittings; the chape has a shield-shaped button. 75.5 cm (Blade 62 cm). (Signs of wear, normal use and patina of age; the scabbard stitching is open. In the condition found, never previously in a collection).
