Description
France, Louis-Philippe (1830–1848).
Model 1816 foot artillery sabre for the National Guard.
One-piece cast brass mount with eighteen scales, without rivets. The pommel bears the emblem of the July Monarchy: a rooster with its right foot resting on a globe, inscribed within a medallion on a sandblasted background, on each side. Straight crossguard with a sandblasted finish, undecorated. Scarlet woolen cord present. Model 1816 sword blade with a light grey patina, featuring two small hollows near the heel and a long hollow towards the point; the maker’s marks and hallmarks have disappeared. Blackened leather scabbard with a central back seam and two brass fittings; the pommel has an oval-shaped button.
64.5 cm (blade 49.5 cm).
(Signs of wear and tear, minor knocks to the blade edges, the scabbard seam open for approximately ten centimetres; in fairly good condition).
