Description
France, Louis-Philippe (1830–1848).
1816-type foot artillery sabre for an officer or non-commissioned officer of the National Guard.
One-piece cast brass hilt with eighteen scale-like ridges and no rivets. The pommel bears the emblem of the July Monarchy: a rooster with its right foot resting on a globe, set within a medallion on a sandblasted background, on each side. Straight crossguard with a sandblasted background, decorated in the centre with a five-petalled flower between two palmettes. Model 1816 sword blade with a slight mottled grey patina, featuring two small hollows near the heel and a long hollow towards the point. Manufacturer’s mark and hallmarks have disappeared. Blackened leather scabbard with a back seam offset to one side within one of the rounded sections and featuring two brass fittings; the chape has a trigger guard and is marked “1171”. The pommel is stamped with a "B" beneath a star within a shield and a "2" within a rectangle. Traces of a manufacturer’s mark stamped into the leather (illegible).
63 cm (blade 48 cm).
(Signs of wear and minor handling marks; in good condition).
