Description
France, Louis-Philippe (1830–1848). Model 1816 foot artillery sword for an officer or non-commissioned officer of the National Guard. One-piece cast brass mount with eighteen scale-like ridges and no rivets. The pommel is decorated with the cockerel of the July Monarchy, its right leg resting on a globe, inscribed within a medallion on a sandblasted background on each side. Straight crossguard with a sandblasted background, decorated in the centre with a five-petalled flower between two palmettes. Straight blade with a grey patina and traces of orange-peel oxidation, double-edged with two long fuller grooves. Blackened leather scabbard with a central back seam and two brass fittings; the pommel has an oval-shaped button and is stamped ‘10’. 55.5 cm (Blade 42.5 cm). (Signs of wear and use; a variant of an officer’s sword with smaller dimensions, uncommon; in fairly good condition).
