Description
France, Louis-Philippe (1830–1848). Model 1816 foot artillery sabre for an officer or non-commissioned officer of the National Guard, with a reduced-size hilt and fitted with a blade dating from the First Empire. One-piece cast brass hilt with eighteen scale-like ridges and no rivets. The pommel is decorated with the cockerel of the July Monarchy; the right side rests on a globe, inscribed within a medallion on a sandblasted background on each side. Straight crossguard with a sandblasted background, decorated in the centre with a five-petalled flower between two palmettes. Straight blade with a mottled grey patina, hollow-ground edge and flat back with a small groove near the spine, engraved with floral motifs, an eagle on one side and a helmeted face on the other, and maker’s mark on the heel “Mfture du Klingenthal Coulaux Frères” corresponding to production circa 1810–12. 52.5 cm (Blade 40 cm).
