Description
France, Louis-Philippe (1830–1848). Superb 1831 model sabre for a non-commissioned officer or officer of the National Guard, privately made, without scabbard. Hilt in cast brass with twenty-one flutes, crossguard ending in quillons decorated with a single disc. Beautiful blade with a mottled grey patina, double-edged with a central ridge, etched with foliage friezes and bearing the inscription ‘GARDE NATIONNALE’ on one side and ‘REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE’ on the other. On the heel, there is a manufacturer’s mark within an oval, partially legible: ‘...FRERE TOULOUSE’. 60 cm (blade 46 cm). (Signs of wear and patina from age; in fairly good condition).
