Description
France, Second Empire (1852–1870).
Small-sized 1831-style ornamental sabre (a lighter version known as the 1855 model), privately made for the Fire Brigade.
One-piece cast brass mount with twenty-one scales; the pommel stamped with a motif of crossed axes, one with a spike and the end of the handle finished with a ball. Crossguard ending in rings with deeply hollowed-out centres, characteristic of the lighter-weight swords intended for the Fire Brigade. Straight blade, double-edged with a central ridge, featuring a light grey patina and traces of oxidation in places. Blackened leather scabbard with a central back seam and two brass fittings; the pommel features a copper-plated brass shield-shaped button.
54.3 cm (Blade 38.7 cm).
(Signs of wear and patina from age; a less common variant of this sword with reduced dimensions; in good condition).
