Customs service sword, made by the Coulaux Manufactory in Klingenthal, circa 1840–45.
Single-piece cast brass mount with twenty flutes, the asymmetrical cap sloping to the left. The straight crossguard with ball-shaped quillons. No tie. White blade, stained in places, with two hollow edges and two cutting edges, with maker’s mark on the heel ‘Coulaux a & c Klingenthal’ and stamped with a crowned cursive ‘D’ in an oval and a crowned cursive ‘B’ in an oval, corresponding to production from the period 1840–45. Blackened leather scabbard with a central back seam and two brass fittings decorated with line work; the pommel has a shield-shaped button.
