Description
France, Louis-Philippe (1830–1848). National Guard officer’s sword, without scabbard. Mounting in gilded cast brass; a cross-guard pommel supporting the hilt, which is finished with an acanthus leaf; the base decorated with winged florets. The joint ring is decorated with stylised foliage, with a lion’s muzzle at its centre. The tang features mother-of-pearl plates grooved vertically. The flattened crossguard ends in a small flower. Symmetrical guard with two supralateral medallions featuring lion heads; the central motif depicts a cockerel with half-spread wings and a plume-like tail, flanked by a charter, a sword and a flag. Scarlet woolen cravat present. Three-edged blade with acid-etched decoration of trophies of arms and floral bouquets, blued and gilded in the lower third. Maker’s mark on the heel: “W” in a gilded cartouche. 93 cm (Blade 81 cm). (Signs of wear and minor handling marks; in good condition).
