Description
United States, first half of the 19th century. Allen & Thurber Patent six-shot percussion "Pepperbox" revolver, circa 1837–1842. Cal. 32. Serial No. 46. Double action. All metal parts in their original bronze finish, worn in places, and bearing the same serial number. The frame is finely engraved with scrollwork. Hammer without crest, marked "ALLENS PATENT". Rotating cylinder with six smooth barrels, fluted with small flat ribs, marked "ALLEN'S PATENT 1837", "CAST-STEEL" and "ALLEN & THUNDER GRAFTON" (corresponding to production between 1837 and 1842). Fluted cylinder. Steel trigger under the trigger guard. Rounded grip with varnished walnut grips. Functional double-action mechanism. The inside of the barrels is clean. 17.5 cm (Barrels 8 cm). (Signs of wear and minor cosmetic flaws, in good condition). Note: Ethan ALLEN (1808–1871), cutler and gunsmith. In 1837, he went into partnership with his brother-in-law Charles THURBER, and later with his second brother-in-law Thomas WHEELOCK. The company moved several times, from Grafton to Norwich, then to Worcester. 1831–1837: E.
