Description
Papal States, mid-19th century.
A rare 1847-model sword for the Papal Guard ("Guardia civica Pontificia"), founded by Pius IX, without a scabbard.
One-piece cast brass hilt with fifteen flutes, a leaf-shaped pommel and a straight crossguard ending in rounded quillons, decorated in the centre with a four-petalled flower of foliage motifs. Blade with a mottled grey patina and traces of oxidation in places, double-edged with a central fuller, bearing the cutler’s mark on the heel: “CHARRIERE A PARIS” on one side and “ACIER FONDU” on the other.

Note: Joseph Frédéric Benoit CHARRIERE (1803–1876), cutler and renowned maker of medical instruments, straight razors and gardening tools, at 9, Rue de l’École-de-Médecine (1833), then at 6, Rue de l’École-de-Médecine (1842). Originally from Switzerland, he became a naturalised French citizen in 1843. Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1843, then Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1851.
